180º turn in Frenkie de Jong's situation: the Dutchman stays at Barça, but his decision has consequences
The situation of the Dutchman Frenkie de Jong at Barça has taken a radical turn in recent weeks, from outcast to idol. De Jong was on the way out last summer, and the only thing that prevented it was his injury. Due to this, he has been away from the playing fields for several months because of a sprain in his right ankle.
Frenkie has gone through one of the most challenging periods at Barça since he arrived in the summer of 2019 from Ajax. The midfielder arrived with a halo of a star, and he demonstrated it in the first seasons; his great class is undeniable. Subsequently, his continuous injuries and physical problems led him into an irregularity that hasn't benefited him at all.

Apart from his physical problems, his refusal to renew with the club and not accept the new economic conditions offered have led to tension between both parties. However, after his return to the playing fields, Hansi Flick has been giving him more minutes, and the Dutchman has been responding. This past Sunday, Frenkie de Jong unlocked the match, coming on in the second half and giving much more fluidity to Barça's attacking play.
Hansi Flick and his relationship with Frenkie de Jong
Barça was stuck in their match against Deportivo Alavés, and Hansi Flick found in Frenkie de Jong the player capable of changing the dynamics of the game. The German coach has praised De Jong's growth in the last matches played; Frenkie has turned the boos from the stands into applause. Against Alavés, Barça shifted up a gear with Frenkie on the field, successfully completing all 41 passes he made during the match.
There is no trace left of the ankle problems the midfielder has had in recent months. De Jong is confident; it shows on the field with his good performances. Against Alavés, he replaced Casado and changed the team's face. He has started three of the last five matches; Frenkie's redemption is already a reality, although his resurgence prevents the arrival of Hansi Flick's greatest desire.
De Jong's continuity at Barça leaves out the signing desired by Hansi Flick

Frenkie de Jong has ignored for months the renewal offer that Barça conveyed to him at the time, creating evident tension with the board. The Dutchman's position could change radically in the coming weeks; De Jong might end up accepting the new salary conditions that Barça proposes. De Jong feels comfortable playing in his position, in the midfield where he can distribute the ball with his undeniable quality.
If De Jong ends up renewing his contract with Barça, the signing desired by Hansi Flick will not happen. Joshua Kimmich was on Barça's agenda; the German midfielder hasn't renewed yet with Bayern and is expected to leave next summer. With Casado, Marc Bernal recovered, and Frenkie de Jong in full condition and having renewed, Kimmich's signing would no longer be necessary.
