Psc Calls on Joan Manuel Serrat to Attack Vox
Catalan socialists appeal for a 'great alliance of culture'
Catalonia, one of the key strongholds for Pedro Sánchez's survival on July 23, has launched a campaign for the useful vote. Once again, in their most difficult moment, the socialists have turned to the world of culture. The leaders of PSC have united against Vox surrounded by artists, actors, directors, and writers.
Among the attendees, the presence of Joan Manuel Serrat, a historic figure of Catalan socialism, stood out. Salvador Illa's party has used Serrat's anti-Francoist pedigree to attack the "censorship" of the "far right".
Alongside Serrat were other notable figures such as actress Vicky Peña, writer Javier Pérez Andújar, director Mario Gas, and actor Álex Casanovas. The event was presided over by the Minister of Culture, Miquel Iceta. Alongside him were the leader of the Catalan socialists, Salvador Illa, and the top candidate in Barcelona, Meritxell Batet.
Speeches Against Vox
Iceta highlighted the value of the cultural sector and called for a "great alliance for culture" to "not retreat in the face of PP and Vox". The minister mentioned the works censored in municipalities governed by the right.
Meritxell Batet has accused PP of surrendering to the "far right" that "endorses censorship and cancellation". In this regard, she referred to the offensive against Cavall Fort in the Burriana Library in Castellón. She lamented that for PP and Vox "language is an instrument of confrontation".
Salvador Illa has mentioned the "lack of respect for the freedom of creation and expression", which "is PP's fault". "The world of culture and Catalonia have in their hands the power to stop this nonsense," he stated. Therefore, he reminded that these elections "are something more".
Joan Manuel Serrat Reappears
Joan Manuel Serrat is a symbol of Catalan socialism. Always identified with PSC's initials, for a long time he was also a reference for Catalan nationalism that did not forget his defiance of Francoism. It was in 1968 when he refused to sing at Eurovision if it wasn't in Catalan.
Like many others, the procés also took Joan Manuel Serrat down, who went from being a reference to being an outcast. With his criticism of independence, he immediately earned the adjective "fascist".
The cruel attacks from the pro-independence movement did not make him move an inch from his defense of Catalanism and Catalan culture. Serrat continues to stand up for PSC whenever the party needs him. As on this occasion, in an electoral event with the world of culture just days before a decisive date.
