Junts Closes the Campaign Pushing the Surpass to Esquerra

Carles Puigdemont and the party's top brass appeal for the strategic vote

Junts is already brushing the dream of surpassing ERC in deputies and becoming the leading pro-independence force in Congress with their fingertips. In recent days, they have stepped up their confrontation. They accuse them of having returned to autonomism and wanting to save Pedro Sánchez by condemning Catalonia.

In her latest event in the Tarragona regions, candidate Míriam Nogueras went all out against ERC. She addressed Pere Aragonès to say that "Catalonia's proposal can't be the same as twenty years ago. Not after October 1, not after prison and exile."

Nogueras reaffirmed the strategy of proposing the self-determination referendum as the only condition for Pedro Sánchez's investiture. "Catalonia is no longer a province of Spain, Catalonia is a nation," the candidate proclaimed.

Junts Parades the Prisoners

Hours after Jordi Turull recalled that he was in prison, Junts showcased another prisoner, Josep Rull. His appearance is not coincidental, as Oriol Junqueras and Marta Rovira had replied to Jordi Turull. Rull reinforced the same message as Turull, who said he hadn't gone through prison to return to autonomism.

"We went to prison to defend Catalonia's independence and that's why we are appearing this July 23," proclaimed Josep Rull. The former minister appealed to "hope instead of fear." He recalled October 1 again, saying that "if you weren't afraid, we have no right to be."

Turull's Message to Junqueras

Jordi Turull said that "the useful vote for independence is Junts because we are not on sale." This is a veiled jab at Esquerra and their proposal to offer the dialogue table and the transfer of Rodalies as a price for the investiture.

Turull called for "all the strength" to "avoid the temptation to go on sale before the season starts." Appealing to the useful vote is a direct affront to ERC's strategy, which has been presenting itself as the useful vote against PP and Vox throughout the campaign. Junts is convinced that there could be a breakthrough on Sunday.

Puigdemont on the Offensive

The event also featured a message from Carles Puigdemont, who has been omnipresent in this campaign. The former president has framed these elections as "a step not definitive but necessary toward independence."

"There are those who think that Pedro Sánchez must be saved or that the right must be stopped. But many, in saving Pedro Sánchez, will forget to save Catalonia," he said, clearly alluding to ERC. "Perhaps we will remain alone for these four years," he added, "but we will remain firm."
