Joan Laporta gifts $10M to Madrid to sign Barça's next center-back

The Barça president, after meeting with Deco and Flick, considers that it is the best option in the current context

Joan Laporta has created a tremendously successful project despite everything that he has had to overcome since his return to the presidency in 2021. His first measures focused on alleviating an unprecedented economic crisis, which forced him to make truly controversial decisions such as Messi's departure or the closure of certain sections. The criticism did not take long to arrive and the results did not follow, but little by little the situation kept improving up to today.

Right now, FC Barcelona can boast of being one of the best teams in the world in sporting terms, but it also has a very interesting economic cushion. Joan Laporta has managed to create an unbeatable environment to build an effective plan that will return the team to the very top. Last year, Barça was already very close to touching glory in the Champions League, and that's why Laporta believes that with a couple of tweaks everything is possible.

Joan Laporta points to the next center-back for FC Barcelona

Joan Laporta understands that the priority to compete at the highest level is to ensure the team's defensive solidity on the big nights. That's why, although Flick already has Cubarsí, Eric, and Araújo, Laporta's intention is to bring in another defender in the summer who will increase competition and raise the level. However, what nobody could imagine was that Real Madrid could benefit from it.

According to several media outlets in Italy, FC Barcelona is following Mario Gila very closely, a powerful center-back who plays for Lazio. The Spanish defender was raised in Real Madrid's youth academy until his departure in 2022. As is already usual in these cases, Florentino closed an interesting agreement with the Italian team that could now cause a shower of millions at Bernabéu.

If Barça sign Mario Gila, Joan Laporta will gift 10 million to Real Madrid

As has been reported by several media outlets, Real Madrid still owns 50% of the rights to a future sale of Mario Gila. Therefore, if FC Barcelona pays the 20 million that Lazio is asking to secure his services, half will go to Bernabéu's coffers. It was a masterstroke by Florentino at the time that could now bear fruit.

Joan Laporta is aware of this, but he believes that Barça gains more than Madrid with the deal. It's true that the whites will receive extra income that is always welcome, but the Catalans will strengthen their back line with a top-level center-back.  We'll see whether Mario Gila's signing ends up being completed and he lands at Camp Nou.
