Gerard Piqué (38) about Barcelona: 'I love my city more than anything, but...'
Gerard Piqué left more than one person puzzled by expressing an opinion that broke with what he used to say publicly
Gerard Piqué has been, for years, one of the most talked-about footballers both on and off the field. Not only because of his sporting achievements with Barça, but also because of his direct character, his defiant tone, and also because of his relationship with Shakira.
Throughout his career, Piqué has made it clear that he isn't afraid of controversy. He has spoken without filters about Catalonia, about politics in sports, and about the relationship he keeps with Spain.

The surprising statements of Gerard Piqué about Barcelona
However, in 2021, he surprised many with statements in which he distanced himself from his usual discourse. During a Davis Cup presentation in Madrid, the former footballer unexpectedly praised the Spanish capital and made an indirect criticism of his hometown.
"I'm from Barcelona and I suppose you know that I love my city more than anything," he began by saying. But immediately after, he made it clear that he saw a big difference between the two capitals:
"I feel a healthy envy of Madrid, of everything they're doing. It's an example for Europe and for the world, and I wish Barcelona were at that level." Piqué acknowledged that in those years he noticed his city was somewhat stagnant and didn't hesitate to praise Madrid's growth.

"It's taking Barcelona a bit more effort, that's why today I have to praise Madrid," he stated. In addition, he wanted to make it clear that his opinion had nothing to do with economic or personal interests.
"There are people who, when they read on social media, say: he does it for money, he does it because he comes here to Madrid. Really, no." Finally, he expressed something that many didn't expect to hear from someone so closely linked to the Catalan environment.

"Madrid has made me feel at home from day one." These statements didn't go unnoticed and provoked reactions both in Madrid and in Barcelona. Piqué, once again, positioned himself without filters.
With his words, Gerard Piqué once again proved that he isn't afraid to express what he thinks. His recognition of Madrid's progress and his constructive criticism of Barcelona reflect an honest view of the moment both cities are experiencing.
