Unexpected, Deco changes his mind about Ronald Araújo, not 80M or 60M, he already has a price

FC Barcelona's defender is raising many doubts, and Deco has made a momentous decision

Ronald Araújo is one of those footballers whose story at FC Barcelona seemed destined to be legendary. He arrived quietly and made his first-team debut in 2019 in a match against Sevilla. From that moment, his progress was meteoric: he went from being a young prospect to becoming one of the most admired center-backs in Europe.

His physical strength, his speed in challenges, and his commitment quickly made him an idol for the culé fans. During the 2020 and 2021 seasons, Ronald Araújo was synonymous with defensive security and commitment. His market value skyrocketed, reaching €70 million ($75.6 million), a figure that placed him among the most sought-after defenders on the continent.

However, that level of excellence has faded over time. For the past couple of years, his performance has entered a worrying trend. Mistakes at key moments and a lack of consistency have caused his status to become a topic of debate within the club.

The new reality of Ronald Araújo

Fans still remember his sending off against PSG in the Champions League, an action that changed the course of that tie. They also remember his lack of accuracy in marking Acerbi in last season's semifinals, a play that ended up being costly. Since then, Ronald Araújo no longer conveys the same sense of authority as before.

All of this has led to his name being strongly mentioned as a possible sale. Last January, the defender was very close to leaving for Juventus. The Italians were willing to offer €70 million ($75.6 million), but Deco personally intervened to convince him to stay at Camp Nou.

Deco assured him that he would remain a key piece in the project and backed his contract renewal until 2031. The deal was closed with a €1 billion ($1.08 billion) release clause, a sign of the value he was given within the sporting structure. However, the situation has changed dramatically in just a few months.

Deco sets Ronald Araújo's sale price

Ronald Araújo's latest performances haven't convinced either the coaching staff or the sporting management. Deco, who was his main supporter in the past, is now seriously considering the option of selling him. His inconsistent performance and the need to generate income are pushing Barça to make painful decisions.

In addition, the market has already corrected his valuation. According to Transfermarkt data, the Uruguayan center-back is currently valued at €35 million ($37.8 million). Aware of this, Deco doesn't expect to repeat last winter's figures and has reportedly set a new asking price: €45 million ($48.6 million).

For now, Juventus remains the most interested club in acquiring his services. Bayern and Manchester United have also inquired about his situation, although they haven't submitted formal offers. At Barça, however, they are clear: if an offer close to €45 million ($48.6 million) arrives, Ronald Araújo will pack his bags in the summer.

Thus, one of the great symbols of the new culé generation could bring his time at the club to an end. His departure would be a surprise, but also a reflection of the pragmatism Deco is trying to impose in sporting management. Neither €80 million ($86.4 million) nor €60 million ($64.8 million): Ronald Araújo's future now has a much more down-to-earth price, just €45 million ($48.6 million).
