Fede Valverde asserts his authority and makes it very clear to Raúl Asencio: 'I don't like...'
The Uruguayan midfielder believes he should have the authority to choose
Fede Valverde has become one of the most important footballers at Real Madrid in recent years.
He arrived as a teenager from Peñarol for just 5 million euros and today he is a key figure in the midfield.
He has won two Champions League titles as a key player, which has earned him recognition at Santiago Bernabéu.
With Carlo Ancelotti on the bench, the Uruguayan excelled thanks to his versatility and commitment. He was able to play in several positions, from midfield to right back, always at an outstanding level.
His physical prowess and technical quality allowed him to be a luxury wildcard for the Italian coach.
A new era with Xabi Alonso
However, since Xabi Alonso's arrival, things have changed. The coach from Tolosa has chosen to place Valverde in a much more rigid double pivot, which has reduced his freedom in attack.
This new role has limited part of his impact and has made his performance seem lower than what he showed in previous seasons.

The debate has now reopened with the absences of Dani Carvajal and Trent Alexander-Arnold for the upcoming Champions League matches.
At the club, some believe Fede Valverde could return to the right back position, as he did very successfully in the past. His physical strength and stamina would be strong arguments.
Fede Valverde's refusal
The player himself has put an end to the speculation. Fede Valverde has been clear when speaking about the possibility of returning to that position.
According to what he explained, he feels like a midfielder and believes he has earned that place at Real Madrid.
"I think I'm one of the pillars of the midfield. I've earned my spot, I'm playing at a high level, and the coach knows I don't really like playing as a right back," he stated.

With these words, the Uruguayan makes it clear that he doesn't want to go back to a role he considers secondary.
His ambition is to keep leading the midfield, even in times of emergency. This stance, however, complicates Xabi Alonso's solutions for Europe.
Raúl Asencio's opportunity
Given Valverde's refusal, everything points to Raúl Asencio being chosen to fill the gap at right back.
The academy player doesn't have a place as a center back, but the circumstances open the door for him to start again. His versatility and tactical discipline convince the coaching staff.
If Asencio performs in the Champions League, he could put Xabi Alonso in a difficult position. A good performance would strengthen his position within the team and give him a chance to establish himself in the first team.
The challenge won't be easy, but the opportunity is there to show he can be much more than a rotation player.
