They are investigating an alleged embezzlement of more than 600,000 euros.
Agents from the Economic and Fiscal Crime Unit (UDEF) of the National Police have just entered Sitges town hall. This is breaking news reported by journalist Anna Punsí. It is an anti-corruption operation investigating alleged irregularities.
National Police agents have entered various areas of Sitges town hall to gather evidence. Alleged irregularities in the awarding of subsidies and the splitting of contracts in the Sitges-Garraf Third Sector Board are being investigated.
According to the journalist, the agents have gone up to the fourth floor of the Citizen Attention Office. The IT area is located there, where the police are obtaining files and emails involved in the case. The investigation is in the hands of the Vilanova i la Geltrú's Investigative Court number 8.
A Dozen Arrested
The police operation is being carried out in four locations, including the homes of those responsible for the Third Sector Board. Meanwhile, the citizen attention offices are operating normally. According to Anna Punsí, the arrest of about a dozen people is expected.
The Investigative Court has been investigating this alleged corruption case for a year. It allegedly involves Sitges town hall and includes members of the current government team led by Aurora Carbonell (ERC). It also implicates members of the previous government headed by Miquel Forns (CiU).
CiU and ERC in the Spotlight
The case directly targets the previous CiU government and the current ERC government. It is estimated that more than 600,000 euros may have been embezzled between 2017 and 2022 through subsidies and split contracts. The entity has been receiving 45,000 euros each year in aid and about 75,000 in minor contracts.
