Anc Assumes There Won't Be a Self-determination Referendum in Catalonia

Dolors Feliu increases the pressure for Junts to block the legislature

First it was Òmnium Cultural, now the Assemblea Nacional Catalana (ANC). Entities of radical independence are increasing pressure on Waterloo for Puigdemont to block Pedro Sánchez's investiture. They see the post-election scenario as an opportunity to resume the conflict.

In an interview in El Periódico, Dolors Feliu, president of the ANC, assumes there won't be a referendum in Catalonia. But she defends the blockade and the repetition of elections "as a wake-up call to the Spanish State".

Everything Leads to the Blockade

The president of the entity has expressed opposition to offering the transfer of Cercanías or the fiscal deficit. "They are past issues," she said, "they were put forward in the previous legislature and there has always been continuous mistreatment toward Catalonia".

Her conditions for the investiture are clear: "That Pedro Sánchez supports Catalonia's independence". But she is skeptical about a positive response from PSOE. "I don't see Sánchez making proposals toward Catalonia's independence, I see the State as very closed".

Puigdemont has put amnesty and the referendum on the table as a starting point for negotiation. Feliu believes that amnesty should be "the final part of a negotiation" subject to the referendum. But she admits that "the State's legal framework is completely closed and the majorities are also not enough to make constitutional reforms".

The Worse, the Better

Therefore, the president of the ANC assumes there won't be a referendum and that everything leads to the blockade. But far from seeing it as something negative, she states that "it's good because it's not like they haven't known for a long time what Catalonia wants. And now they are surprised because we want independence".

Feliu has been adamant about the position ERC and Junts should maintain. "We are for independence, not for other issues that no longer serve. And if elections need to be repeated, I believe that the independents shouldn't hesitate".

Dolors Feliu sees the blockade as positive "as a way to visualize the relevance of Catalonia and Catalan voters". She recalls that without Catalonia, PP and Vox would have clearly won. And she appeals to PSOE and Sumar to "make a move" if they want something to change in the balance of power in the State.

A Plan toward Independence

Dolors Feliu has recalled that "without the independence parties Pedro Sánchez would have no option". That's why she states that "a plan is needed to achieve Catalonia's independence in democracy". The president of the ANC calls for "a change of paradigm of the State regarding Catalonia".

Her words make it clear that the radical independence movement led by entities like Òmnium and the ANC won't allow anything other than the self-determination referendum. Their intention is to lead Spain to the blockade. And open a crisis favorable to the reactivation of the conflict.
