Neither Alejandro Balde nor Gerard Martín, Flick has already warned: 'Starter against Oviedo'

Flick makes a move before visiting Oviedo and surprises with an unexpected plan for the left wing

Alejandro Balde is Barça's starting left-back and, for many, the best in the world in that position, but his physical fragility poses a challenge for Flick. Yesterday, he returned to training with the rest of his teammates after recovering from his latest injury, but he still isn't fully recovered. This prevents him from being available for the next match against Oviedo, forcing Flick to look for urgent alternatives.

Flick prepares a surprise against Oviedo

In Alejandro Balde's absence, the former Cornellà player, Gerard Martín, has been the most common option to fill the left-back position. His adaptation to the elite level has been remarkable: he has shown defensive composure, enough physical effort, game reading, and commitment. Flick has already trusted him in demanding matches, showing that he can take on that responsibility, but he won't be the one chosen against Oviedo.

Another alternative is Jofre Torrents, the La Masia gem who is also waiting for his opportunity. Torrents combines talent, youth, and enthusiasm, although he hasn't accumulated many minutes so far this season. Flick is clear that the academy player must be ready before starting, so he won't start against Oviedo either.

Without Alejandro Balde, Gerard Martín, or Jofre Torrents: Flick gives a hint in press conference

This Thursday, Barça visit Oviedo's stadium with the huge need to secure all three points. Real Madrid has a perfect record of victories and Barça doesn't want to fall behind in the race for LaLiga. In this context, every decision Flick makes will be scrutinized, especially the one regarding the left-back position.

If we look at previous matches, the most normal thing would be for Gerard Martín to start again. Balde won't be available, and although Jofre Torrents has a lot of potential, his inexperience makes him a risky test. Perhaps for that reason, after the match against Getafe, Flick made some statements that raised doubts about whether Eric García could fill that spot.

Flick acknowledged after the Getafe match that Eric García "is an unbelievable player and has a lot of confidence, he can play in many different positions." He also stated that "on Thursday we need him, because we don't know when Balde will return". That suggests that Eric García may be considered for that left-back position against Oviedo.

If Flick ends up choosing Eric García as the starting left-back, it would be unexpected. It would mean that Gerard Martín isn't the only available substitute, but it would also be a blow to Jofre Torrents, who would find himself pushed further down the rotation. We'll see if Flick's words were just a warning or if they become reality.
